Interested in helping round up extra mule deer in Roundup, Montana? For the fourth consecutive year, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MFWP) is holding a special archery-only hunt geared toward decreasing the mule deer population in and around the city. 120 either-sex mule deer hunting licenses that will be available on a first-come, first served basis, the Montana Standard reports.
The limit is two tags per hunter. Tags cost $10 for residents and $75 for nonresidents and can be purchased online or at any license dealer. These special tags are only for the Roundup hunt on a specific property in and around the town. To be eligible, you must already have a current Montana conservation license, base hunting license and bow-and-arrow license, according to the Montana Standard.
If you do grab one of the 120 available tags, be sure to check in at the Roundup city offices prior to the hunt to obtain permission. The city could assign you to a specific area as the special hunt is only for property owned by the City of Roundup, Musselshell County, Irene Snortland and Green Oil Field Service. Maps for the special hunt are available at the Roundup city offices.
According to the Montana Standard, since starting this special hunt four years ago, town officials say the number of deer-vehicle collisions has significantly decreased and there have been fewer complaints in general about “aggressive deer.”
Remember: this is an archery only hunt due to the proximity to houses and businesses. The season begins Nov. 9 and ends Feb. 15. If you are successful, you are required “to bag and properly dispose of the deer viscera” and let the Roundup city offices know you did harvest a deer during the special hunt.
Good luck!
