With the 2017 draw pretty much over, with a few states yet to release their results... hunters are either planning for their upcoming hunts, or some are trying to pick up last minute leftover tags or OTC tags. If you still don't have your season ironed out, you're in luck. Several states have leftover tags for 2017.

Colorado

Leftover big game limited licenses in Colorado for antelope, bear, deer, elk go on sale at 9 a.m. on August 1, 2017 in person and by phone. They can then be purchases online at midnight August 2, 2017. Note: Also new for 2017, Colorado will no longer produce a preview list of available limited licenses. All of the returned licenses that take four or less preference points in the current years draw will be available for purchase the week after processing is complete. After the initial run, hunt codes will randomly be placed on the current leftover and leftover OTC with cap lists on business days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In 2017, Colorado changed their leftover license process. We covered this information on all of our 2017 Colorado application strategy articles or you can find the information on our state profile. See the links below:

Nevada

The second draw application period for Nevada is from June 9 through June 26. Both residents and nonresidents are available to apply for the second draw. The deadline to submit your application online is 11 p.m. PST. You can apply online here. Results will be made available on July 21, 2017. The bonus point application is also open until July 3. Note: If you apply for a tag in the second draw and are successful you will lose your bonus points. If you are building points, I highly suggest you avoid picking up a leftover tag. The remaining tags are not worth burning 3, 5, or even 10 bonus points for. But, if you're just starting to apply in Nevada or you're looking for a hunt to fill a void in your hunt schedule, then applying for a leftover tag is a smart move. The list of available tags and their trophy potential can be found in the tables below.

Tag cuts happened all across Nevada once again 2017. To put the tag cuts in perspective... in 2014 there were 2,812 mule deer tags available in the second draw. The majority of those were antlerless with 1,640 tags, but there also was 654 archery buck tags, 52 muzzleloader buck tags, plus 455 junior either sex deer tags. In 2015 there were 1,747 leftover antlerless deer tags, 465 leftover archery buck tags, plus 345 junior either sex deer tags. In 2016 the following leftover tags were available: 157 antlerless deer tags, 110 archery buck tags, plus 84 junior either sex deer tags. In 2017 there are only 10 antlerless, 106 archery buck tags, plus 62 junior either sex tags. This is also the first time in a very long time that Unit Group 101-109 archery didn't have leftover tags.

Note: All remaining tags are available to both resident and nonresident eligible applicants, regardless if they were resident or nonresident leftover. The tables below show which residency and units went undersubscribed in the main draw and how many permits are now available in the second draw.

For the tables below, the single asterisk means these quotas were resident quota remaining after the main draw, now available to both resident and nonresident eligible applicants. The double asterisk means these quotas were nonresident quota remaining after the main draw, now available to both resident and nonresident eligible applicants.

New Mexico

For 2017 there are 306 deer hunting licenses and 101 javelina licenses available as leftovers. These licenses go on sale at 10 a.m. MDT June 21 and are first-come, first served. Note: Leftover licenses will be sold online only. Licenses and stamps can be printed from any computer by signing on to an account and selecting “My purchases.” You'll be able to apply online here.

For the first 24 hours, the sale will be open only to New Mexico residents, but at 10 a.m. on June 22, the sale is open to anyone – regardless of residency. This is a great chance to snap up a leftover license.

To be eligible to buy a leftover license, hunters are reminded that they previously must have purchased either a Game Hunting or Game Hunting and Fishing license. Those licenses, along with Habitat Improvement Stamps and Habitat Management Access Validations, also can be obtained through online accounts. Hunters are strongly encouraged to obtain or review online customer accounts, including their Customer Identification Number, user name and password, and to be signed on to their account before the sale begins. Popular licenses often sell out very fast and the majority of tags are picked up by residents before nonresidents can pick them up.
