This has been a top unit for high-quality elk hunting for some time. Much of the western border is shared with Fort Apache Indian Reservation, which is famous for producing big bulls. Mule deer and antelope also offer a high-quality hunting experience. The largest forest fire in Arizona history, the Wallow Fire, burned about half the unit in 2011.

The best elk units in Arizona typically share a border with a reservation or National Park. This is a great elk unit with several season choices. In 2011, the Wallow Fire burned over 50% of the unit, which has now provided a surplus of forage for all big game species. Antelope live in many parts of the unit, even above 9,000 feet. Mule deer populations are lower than other units, but this unit has a potential for quality bucks.

Mixed-conifer and aspen forests located at the highest elevations. This unit has miles of Ponderosa pine forests with transition areas to both mixed-conifer and Pinyon-Juniper forests. The lower elevations are mostly Pinyon-Juniper woodlands with some grasslands. Overall, the unit is mostly forested with mountains and large drainages. There are a few rivers and streams that flow year-round.

Forest and county roads provide good public access into the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and state property. Limited private land restricts some access. Mount Baldy and Escudilla Mountain wilderness areas are closed to mechanical transportation, including bicycles. St. Peter's Dome and the Hulsey Bench are quiet and closed to motorized vehicles. Numerous recreation areas have vehicle restrictions. Some parts of the Wallow Fire area may be closed to motorized vehicles for rehabilitation. ATVs allowed are only on roads; four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended on muddy roads. Do not trail a wounded animal onto tribal land without first getting permission.

Mixed conifer and open alpine meadows comprise the higher elevations. Pines mixed with oaks dominate much of the terrain in mid-elevations. A large burn at middle elevations has an abundance of new oaks, aspens and brush, providing good forage for wildlife. Lower elevations have juniper forests with large, open grass and brush flats.
