With Prescott at its southwestern corner, this mostly public unit provides hunting for mule deer, elk, Coues deer and antelope. It has produced pronghorns big enough to qualify for the Boone and Crockett record book, especially in the flatter and lower western half.

This unit includes challenging hunting for elk, mule deer and Coues deer due to their low or declining numbers, but offers excellent hunting for antelope. Private land limits access to state land in the west half where pronghorns live close to rural neighborhoods. Some private landowners offer walk-in access and some of them charge a fee. As development continues, ground open to hunters is shrinking. There is a low elk tag quota. This unit is mostly high desert terrain with juniper trees.

Terrain rises steeply from the Verde River to Mingus Mountain. Several canyon and drainages are steep on and below Mingus Mountain. Land in the west and south is flat or has shallow inclines. Elevation changes about 4,500 feet in eight horizontal miles

Dirt roads access the Prescott National Forest, which dominates the eastern half, while the western half is a mix of private, state and BLM land. No vehicles allowed in 5,833-acre Woodchute WIlderness Area—hikers and horseback riders only.

Growing at lower elevations along the Verde River are mesquite trees, cottonwoods, willows and prickly pear cactus. Middle elevations are high desert grassland valleys with chaparral and juniper forests. Junipers and ponderosa pines are at high elevations.

Camping is allowed on most public land. Lodging can be found in Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Cordes Junction, Prescott, Prescott Valley and Chino Valley.
