On The Ground

This small unit is found south of the town of Barstow in southern California. This area is mostly public with large tracts of roadless country available in the Newberry Mountains and Rodman Mountains wilderness areas. The terrain can be tough, rocky, and dry and hunters will need to plan accordingly.

Because this is a new unit the first few years of the hunt should see a good crop of mature rams with an older age class.

Terrain

The terrain in this zone is a wide range of open desert valleys, ridges, and eroded canyons. The canyons and washes are deep and often extremely long, with exposed walls sloughing with erosion. Despite the harshness of the climate, you should see a wide variety of plants and animals adapted to life in the desert. Hunters will find plenty of glassing opportunities in the deep canyons within the wilderness areas although physically traversing some of this country can be very physically demanding.

  • 70% public land

  • Elevations range from 2,600 - 5,800 feet

The vegetation through the zone is typical desolate desert country. Some of the various vegetation types you may encounter are the spiny-leaved Orocopia sage, Alverson's foxtail cactus, Orcutt's woody aster, and the Mecca aster.

The primary routes of access for this unit will include Interstate 40, Highway 287, and Northside Rd. Hunters will find routes leading to the most of the wilderness boundaries but foot travel will likely be necessary to get into range on the sheep. The land composition is mostly public but there are some scattered parcels of private and land ownership maps can be a big help.

Barstow is the nearest city with modern lodging and accommodations but most of the camping or lodging will be primitive remote camping. Camping outside designated camping areas is permitted in BLM areas, as long as the site has been previously used as a camping area. Firewood is scarce throughout the desert, hunters must supply campfire material.
