Comprised of scenic mountains and mesas south of the Colorado River between Burns, State Bridge and north of Eagle and Gypsum, this mostly public unit is managed for high-quality mule deer hunting. Hunters may also hunt elk here and may buy tags over the counter during some seasons.

This unit traditionally is a good place for hunters to take branch-antlered bulls. The bigger elk usually come off of private land or pull out of summer range in high country. Some hunters are frustrated by the number of other hunters they see and private land impedes access to some places.

This unit has two small wilderness study areas that are separated by a one to five-mile-wide strip of private land, Bull Gulch which is in the west and Castle Peak further east. Terrain varies from about 6,200 feet on the Colorado River to more than 11,200 feet near Castle Peak.

Private land impedes access in some parts of the unit. You need a good map and a GPS unit loaded with land ownership data.

Some high ridges and slopes are treeless, including some extremely steep tallus slopes in the central part of the unit. North slopes, even at high elevations are timbered with firs and spruces, while middle elevations have Douglas fir aspens, grass meadows and sagebrush, the low elevations have pinyon and juniper, sagebrush, oak brush and other brush. Water is there with many springs, small lakes and perennial streams, some of which support trout.

Nearby Eagle caters to hunters and has several options for lodging as well as a small sporting goods store. You can buy groceries, gas and supplies in town. Camping is allowed on public land.
