A tiny unit—28.9 square miles— entirely on the grounds of the U.S. Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs.
Hunters apply for years to draw a mule deer tag because big bucks are killed every year despite restrictive Air Force controls. A military escort must accompany each hunter and the academy can shut down the hunt anytime.
Rolling foothills and creek bottoms along the eastern base of the Rampart Range.
Access is limited. Hunters who draw a deer tag in the Colorado Parks and Wildlife lottery must then buy an access permit from the AFA Outdoor Recreation Center and attend a mandatory safety orientation. Each hunter must always be with an Air Force escort.
Willows along creek bottoms, lawns, brush, conifers, golf courses and landscaped grounds.
Camping on the grounds is limited to persons with military identification. Nonmilitary individuals must be accompanied by a military sponsor to camp. Colorado Springs offers lodging and other services. A new Bass Pro Shop is across from the north entrance to the academy.
