This somewhat smaller unit is located in north-central Colorado and along the Wyoming border. Hunters will find a large collection of public lands here with a fairly interesting mix of terrain types. A large portion of the central and western portions of the unit are comprised of open sage country but mountainous terrain can be found along the eastern and northern edges. Good densities of deer, elk, and antelope are found here along with a great populations of moose.
Great hunting can be found here for all of the available species. Later in the year deer and elk will move into lower elevation areas, much of which are private, but some excellent public opportunities can still be found.
This unit is largely composed of mixed terrain types which create hunting opportunities for hunters of all backgrounds. The western and central portions of the unit are primarily open and vast sage expanses with rolling hills and brushy creeks. The eastern and north portions of the units will see a much more exaggerated terrain with mountainous ridges and heavy timber. In general, glassing conditions are favorable throughout the unit.
Hunters will find favorable access options through much of this unit with the best options being located on the eastern edge. Many of the lower elevation, late-season habitat areas are comprised of private lands and hunters will want to pay close attention to these boundaries.
Lower elevations have portions of agricultural lands with sagebrush mixed with shortgrass prairie, cottonwoods and willow stands line creek bottoms. Foothills to mountain ridges contain ponderosa pine, aspen, lodgepole, blue spruce and fir. Glassing are great thorughout the unit but many of the north and east facing slopes in higher elevations will be heavily timbered.
Some modern lodging options are available throughout the unit but many hunts will also opt for more primitive camping options. Gear and grocery needs can be met in a few of the small towns throughout the unit but any specialty needs will need to be met prior to leaving on the hunt.
