Some elk and mule deer live year round in this unit, which borders Utah and extends south to Dolores, but many animals migrate here to winter in low to middle-elevation terrain.
Much of the land is composed of hills and mesas with creek drainages leading down to rugged Dolores Canyon. The San Juan National Forest covers the central part of the unit with an average elevation of 8,000 feet. Along U.S. Route 491 from the Utah state line are irrigated fields and other private lands. Some private property also is near Lone Mesa State Park. McPhee Reservoir, which contains many species of fish, is right next to Dolores. Rolling hills and canyons are north of the reservoir.
Much of the unit has public road access. A few well-maintained roads lead to primitive four-wheel-drive ATV roads that access the backcountry.
Low elevations mainly consist of rolling hills covered in sagebrush, oak brush, juniper and pinyon pines with sparse cottonwood trees along creeks. Middle and higher elevations have mesa tops are covered with oak brush, aspens, firs, spruces, grass, wildflowers, cover flats and meadows.
Most hunters camp along roads on public ground. The closest towns with lodging are Dolores and Dove Creek.
