Most of this unit is mountainous terrain in the Nez Perce National Forest around Elk City and has a lot of elk and whitetail deer along with a few mule deer.

Some bigger whitetails have been taken here in the past, but mature mule deer are not seen as often. Bowhunters can buy elk tags over-the-counter. There is a December archery season for elk and whitetail deer. Whitetail rifle tags are valid until late November.

Situated east of Grangeville and around Elk City, this unit is mostly mountainous terrain in the Nez Perce National Forest. Some of the mountains have flattened tops with steep sides. Others have narrow, rugged ridges. The South Fork of the Clearwater River runs through a steep canyon. A lot of peaks and ridges are from 5,000-7,600 feet above sea level and are mainly forested to their highest points. Some mountains are higher and rocky with big rockslides and thinly forested slopes, such as Gospel Peak at 8,345 feet and Pyramid Peak at 8,369 feet. Between Grangeville and the mountains and near Harpster are grassy plains and farm fields, rising to foothills that are a mixture of conifer woods and grassy and brushy slopes. Many meadows surround Elk City. The Gospel Hump Wilderness occupies roughly 100 square miles of the southern part of the unit.

Hunters can easily reach national forest lands on a network of forest roads that start at paved highways. Some roads are graveled and maintained, while others are primitive two-tracks. Highway 14, which follows the South Fork of the Clearwater River, is the main road and connects Grangeville in the east with Elk City. Many side roads lead to countless hunting spots. A rugged road from Orogrande Summit to Hump Lake leads to a trailhead that access the northern part of the Gospel Hump Wilderness. Getting into the wilderness after heavy snowfall accumulates can be difficult. Virtually all private land is posted.

Lowlands are mostly grassy meadows with brushy slopes and ravines and conifer woodlots. Medium and high lands are covered by firs, spruces and pines. Some parts have been logged or burned and feature saplings and brush. Some old mines have left tailings that are mostly covered with grass and low brush.

Hunters in early seasons mostly camp on forest land. Red River Campground near Elk City has 40 tent or RV sites with no hookups, but closes September 15. Fish Creek Campground about 8 miles from Grangeville and has 10 tent or RV sites that are open through October. Lodging is available at the Elk City Hotel and Gift Shop and at several motels in Grangeville, including the Gateway Inn and the Evergreen Suites.
