This area stretches about 16 miles from north to south and 13 miles at its widest point. Hunters have taken a couple of bull moose each year.
Most hunters fill their tags on bulls ranging from around 30-38” in width. Logged-over areas provide openings and edges with browse
This unit is on the north and west sides of Dworshak Reservoir. A lot of the land varies from flat to moderately steep, with the steepest slopes located along Dworshak Reservoir. Unit boundaries range from about 1,600 to 3,800 feet above sea level with the interior no higher than 4,000 feet. Roads that form most of the unit boundaries typically run from about 2,500 to 4,000 feet or so in elevation. The high points are Little Green Mountain, Sourdough Ridge and Gold Butte. The tiny community of Headquarters is at the southern tip of the unit with high points like Micky Point, Beaver Butte, Thompson Butte, Dull Axe Mountain, Township Butte, Silver Butte and Bertha Hill.
The land is covered in a patchwork of old and new forests, logged areas, meadows and pastures. Forests are full of larches, hemlocks, pines, tamarack, firs, cedars and spruces. Berry bushes, willows, ferns, various forbs, shrubs, saplings and immature trees grow in clearcuts. Some grassy meadows, pastures and a few marches with reeds can also be found here. Willows, brush and trees cover some of the creek bottoms.
Most of the land is owned by the state or private timber companies, but a few hundred acres of federal land can be found here. Road access is good. The northern boundary is the road between Elk River and Grandad Bridge over Dworshak Reservoir, which has been repaired and reopened. Landowners usually give permission to hunters with moose tags. Hundreds of miles of old and new logging roads give access to almost every section.
