There are a lot of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in a big part of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness and part of the Payette National Forest outside of the wilderness boundaries.
In Idaho and Valley County, this unit produces some good Rocky Mountain bighorns, but it can be a hard hunt. Hunters should try to scout before the season opens and can expect to hike a lot.
There is a lot of remote places in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, and is about 40 miles east of McCall. The Salmon River Mountains are made up of steep peaks and ridges between deep canyons and big draws. The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is the eastern border. Part of the unit is outside of the wilderness has the same terrain.
Spruces, firs and pines cover up a lot of the land, especially ridges and north and east-facing slopes over 6,000 feet. Some parts of the wilderness were burned in forest fires that burned a lot of trees. Southern and western slopes are steep and dry, and a lot of the high terrain is rugged with some patches of grass, small trees and brush.
Plan to pack in a backpack or wall tent, there are no Forest Service camping spots here, or outside the wilderness.
