This district is in northwest Montana on the Rocky Mountain Front and is commonly referred to as the Sun River WMA District. Elk and deer hunting in this district is largely controlled by private landowners and rules and regulations of the Sun River WMA. Rifle elk tags are extremely limited and are among the most sought after among Montana residents seeking a once in a lifetime type trophy elk hunt.

This district is most well known for the trophy bulls it can produce on the limited entry rifle hunt, which takes place during a heavy migration. The archery elk hunt is available on a general tag but can be very tough, most of the districts wintering elk are not present during archery season and some resident elk are on strictly managed private land.

Beginning high along Sawtooth Ridge on the western boundary, the district is rough rocky mountain front country. Transitioning easterly from mountainous, to foothills, to flat farm and wetlands at lower elevations. The Sun River WMA is mostly moderate foothill country getting steeper as you go west.

Public access is mostly restricted to the Sun River WMA. The rest of the district is primarily controlled by private landowners and outfitters. Access is much better during the archery season than later in the rifle season.

The Rocky Mountain Front is home to some of the most beautiful hunting country in the west. Diverse forests of ponderosa pine, aspen, Douglas fir and cottonwood creeks choked with wild berries are found throughout the region. As you travel east in the district the land opens up to more grassy riparian habitat with willow creek beds and marshy wetlands.

Options in this district include backcountry style camps, public campgrounds, outfitted lodges and hotels. Augusta is the hub for this district and is no stranger to accommodating hunters. Everything from lodging, fuel and supplies and even a couple watering holes are available for hunters in the area.
