This district is located in south central Montana and is comprised almost entirely of private land. Hunting opportunities are extremely limited in this area. Rifle elk tags are very limited. Mule deer and whitetail are present in this district and access is restricted by private landowners. Almost all hunting in this area is done by local landowners and their friends and family.
This area is not known for trophy deer or elk. Most of the deer and what few elk inhabit the area reside on private land that is inaccessible to the public. Your best bet to have a hunting opportunity of any kind in this area is to get private access to hunt whitetail deer on Rock Creek.
This district consists of flat benches with agriculture and is cut by long open coulees that lead to small creeks and river bottoms. There is some bigger riparian country in the center of the district but it’s mostly rolling hill country.
Public access for hunting in this district is very poor. Hunting is almost exclusively done on private lands that only allow access to friends and family. Some landowners allow whitetail deer hunting access along the river bottoms due to overpopulation of deer and crop damage.
This district is a mix of riparian pasture with prairie grasses, sagebrush and a few spruce and pine trees. Cottonwood river beds surround the district with agricultural fields throughout. Beats, corn and alfalfa are the primary crops in this area.
Most people hunting in this area are day hunting deer and stay in hotels in Billings or Red Lodge. There is no backcountry to camp in and private lands are very restricted for camping opportunities.
