This district, found in northeastern Montana, lies north of the famous Missouri River Breaks. Deer hunters will find a fun hunt here with good deer numbers and decent trophy potential. All elk hunting in this area will be by permit only. There are some small sections of agricultural land found on the northern and eastern borders, but the hunting district is largely made up of huge expanses of Bureau of Land Management and state owned lands. These lands will largely be comprised of rolling prairies and steep coulees with little to no under brush. Hunters will be advised to bring optics on this hunt and to be prepared to spend hours behind them.

This hunting district is most known for its elk hunting with very good numbers. Mule deer hunting is more opportunity-driven with deer generally being harvested at a younger age. There is minimal whitetail deer hunting. This district has the best opportunities at mule deer and elk. Most of primary game habitat will be found on the southern end of the unit near Fort Peck Resevoir.

This area will appear very flat and generally boring at first glance. As hunters begin to dive into the country they will begin to notice snaking coulees that run through the area with scattered pockets of water and high vantage points. Very little vegetation will be found yet the terrain will still keep things interesting from a spot and stalk standpoint. Exposed rock will be abundant in this area and stalking can be noisy at times so caution must be taken. With the flat nature hunters can too easily get careless when glassing and must remember not to get themselves skylined. If you can see the deer, they can see you.

With this hunting district containing a lot of publicly accessible lands, access will not be an issue for most hunters. Several roads wind themselves throughout the district, but much of the land will remain mostly inaccessible unless hunters are willing to hike the miles. The terrain itself will be fairly easy to hike and most hunters should have no problem moving about. The roads found in this hunting district will become almost impassible during periods of rain and moisture due to thick gumbo that can dry like concrete. Access is good with the Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge on the southern end of the unit, this area will provide some of the more remote hunting opportunities but the refuge does have it's own hunting regulations in addition to the state regulations and hunters will want to be aware of these.

On the northern end of the hunting district large patches of Cottonwood and wheat grass will be found in the small section of the Milk River Valley. Covering nearly the entirety of the district will be large expanses of wheat grass and rock with scattered patches of juniper and sage. As you continue to follow the ridge lines towards the reservoir look for the draws and coulees to begin to fill with thick patches of juniper and sage while the ridge tops maintain their somewhat arid appearance. In the central portion of the district mature stands of ponderosa and Douglas fir will be found in abundance along with other native greenery. This portion will be a natural attraction for most of the animals in the district.

This district will offer many options for lodging with most of them, outside of primitive camping, being found on the eastern end of the hunting district. Groceries and other amenities can be found in several small towns across the area and sporting goods can be purchased in Glasgow and Malta, which is located just outside of the unit. For those also interested in other recreational activities, great fishing can be found on the Milk River and in Fort Peck Resevoir.
