Major landmarks include the Granite Mountain and the East Range, which starts about seven miles southeast of Winnemucca. This unit supports mule deer and antelope herds along with some desert bighorn sheep.

Parts of the East Range and on Granite Mountain are steep, and the rest of the terrain is flat to mild. The northern half is roughly half private and half BLM land. The southern half is mostly BLM land, especially the western side. The Humboldt River runs along the northeastern border in Unit 042. Dun Glen Flat and Buena Vista Valley are west of the mountains, while Grass Valley and Pleasant Valley are on the eastern border.

Most of the mountains are public, but much of the northern half is a checkerboard mixture of private and BLM property. Pleasant Valley is mostly BLM property. The northern halves of Buena Vista and Grass valleys are mostly private, while the southern halves are mostly BLM land. Dun Glen Flat is largely private. Hunters can drive to most areas and can hike to most other public areas. Vehicle access is limited at high elevations.

Various primitive roads provide access to the interior of the unit. They branch from the following primary routes:

Much of the East Range was burned by range fires in the past 20 years, leaving a great deal of cheatgrass, which is slowly being replaced by native vegetation. In the rest of the unit desert brush is predominant along with pinyon/juniper woodland. Aspens and mountain mahoganies grow high on the mountains.

The closest lodging is in Winnemucca at the northern tip of the unit. Lovelock also has motels. Hunters can bufy supplies and fuel at both towns and at Ms. B’s truck stop at Mill City. Hunters may camp almost anywhere on public land.
