Terrain

Steep elevation changes, particularly on 9,112-foot Lone Mountain and parts of the Weepah Hills, Montezuma Range and Palmetto Mountains. Rolling hills and desert flats at about 4,700 feet in elevation comprise the rest of the topography.

  • Roughly 1,919 square miles

  • 98.6% public land

  • Elevations from 4,700-9,112 feet

Mostly desert scrub and brush, while other areas are dominated by low desert plants and others by pinyon and juniper.

Largely public land with good vehicle access to most places. Some areas are reached by foot. US Route 6/95 is the northern boundary and is the best access into the north. Primitive roads from US Route 6/95 provide good access into Lone Mountain and Weepah Hills regions. State Route 265 is the western boundary and a good route to access the northwest, primarily the Weepah Hills. The eastern region of the Weepah Hills is best reached from primitive routes that leave US Route 6/95 and Tonopah. Silver Peak Road serves as a good primary route to access the southeastern part of the Weepah Hills and the northern Montezuma Range. Dirt roads from US Route 95 near Goldfield penetrate the Montezuma Range. State Route 266 has the best access into the Palmetto Mountains.

Lodging is in Goldfield with more lodging options in Tonopah. Free overnight travel trailer and RV stays are available at the Miller Rest Area along US Route 6/95 and at Goldfield Park. Tonopah has RV parks with power and water hookups for a fee. You can buy supplies and fuel in Tonopah, Goldfield and Silver Peak. Most hunters camp at any suitable site they find on public land.
