Hunters discussing Area 24 - Thunder Basin in Wyoming have highlighted a few key insights that could enhance the experience for others planning a hunt there. The terrain is challenging, with a mix of open grasslands and rugged hills, which requires careful preparation and a solid understanding of wind patterns for effective stalking. Many noted that the unit hosts a robust antelope population, yet the success rates are highly tied to weather conditions and water availability, suggesting it's crucial to time your hunt after rains for better game visibility. Finally, while the draw odds are competitive, those who study maps and scout early report the best chances of success, especially for those focusing on the early to mid-fall season.
This smaller unit is found in the northeast portion of the state and just southeast of Gillette. There are a few areas of public lands including the Thunder Basin National Grassland, BLM land, and state land that can be hunted, but pressure is high in these areas due to minimal public lands available.
Antelope populations in the Sheridan Region are managed recreationally so most units are designed to give hunters a lot of opportunities. Access to private lands are difficult, but hunters willing to wait until after opening day and weekend can find easier access to private land.
