Area 71, also referred to as East Poison Spider, is located in the central part of the state west of Casper. Comprised of high plains desert, this unit contains mostly private land with a few large tracts of public land. Some of the best hunting opportunities, and success rates, will be found on private lands but public land hunters will still find some great options if they are willing to put in the work.

This area is covered by mostly private land, however public land can be found in larger tracts. This area has high success rate for harvest. Trophy potential is fair, but the Pine Mountain area accounts for some of the larger bucks.

This unit consists of a variety of grassy or desert-like open prairie, with large basins, creek bottoms and rolling hills that provide opportunity for stalking. Gas and oil drilling activity provides access roads in places. Physically traversing this area will be fairly straight forward and most hunters will not have any issues.

This hunt area is bordered by County Roads 201 and 210 on the south and west, U.S. Highway 20 on the north and the Kendrick Canal on the east. Public access in this unit is good. Use the Poison Spider road and some remote 2-track roads to access public land. County roads are well maintained, but others may only be passable with 4-wheel drive or ATVs.

Large open land with sagebrush and grasslands make up most of this area. Rocky bluffs, sagebrush, cedars and small trees are to be expected as the elevation climbs. The Pine Mountain area is rocky and sparsely timbered.

Casper is the closest town of any size, and offers many options for lodging. Groceries, gas, and other amenities can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location.
