On The Ground

This area can be found in Western Wyoming, north of the Hoback Rim and east of the Hoback River. It has had an increase in mule deer buck quality and numbers with the opportunity to harvest a whitetail near the creek bottoms. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region H and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 130, 138, 139, 140, 142, 146, 149, 150, 151, 152, 153, 155, 156.

Bucks can be found all throughout this unit with trophy bucks usually seen at higher elevations. The archery season is the best time to find deer in bachelor groups and in their summer patterns. Glassing, then spot and stalking is the best choice for archery and rifle.

Terrain

The terrain here has long and deep canyons that gain in elevation and reach the high peaks on mountain ranges. There are also ranches in the east of the unit with limited access.

  • Roughly 180 square miles

  • 86.5% public land

  • Elevations from 6,800-11,300 feet

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

  • 7.8% Wilderness

Most of the vegetation here is dominated by sagebrush, aspen and conifers. Ranches in the east have creek bottoms with willows and cottonwood trees.

A lot of National Forest land with good public access, and ranch lands in the eastern portion of the unit can be found here. Most roads are marked with Forest Service and county signs.

  • ATVs and UTVs recommended

  • Wet conditions make roads slick

  • Four-wheel drive and chains are recommended during late season hunts

Most hunters will camp remotely on the Forest Service land with no permit required. Motel lodging in several areas can be found south of the unit in Pinedale and Big Piney.
