This area consists of tracts of private lands and state lands with the Medicine Bow National Forest located in the east.

A large number of mule deer can be found within this area. The wilderness that is located in this area can restrict nonresident access but also holds large amounts of deer and many trophy size bucks. The rocky outcrops and dense forest give mature bucks many places to hide.

The land in the west of the unit is made up of rolling hills and private ranch lands, with BLM and state land sections in some areas. Some hunters hunt in the National Forest in the east of the unit. The Nation Forest has higher elevations in the conifer forests with rocky outcroppings located in many areas.

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

Several private land tracts in the western portion of the area restrict access. Good access is located in the west of the unit in the National Forest. Roads will be marked with Forest Service and county signs. Wind and early snowstorms can also make vehicle access hard.

Short grass prairie and cottonwood trees, sagebrush flats and irrigated ranch lands cover the majority of the area in the west. The east of the unit has thick conifer forests, aspen trees, willow-lined creek bottoms and rocky outcrops.

Some hunters will camp remotely on the National Forest Lands with no permit required. Lodging is also found west of the unit in Saratoga.
