Area 2 - Palisades, Wyoming, is a favored choice among self-guided DIY hunters, especially non-residents seeking mountain goat opportunities. While there is some wilderness, such as the Jedediah Smith Wilderness, the unit remains accessible for those prepared for a physically demanding hunt. There are indeed mountain goats present south of Highway 22, though hunters should be mindful of potential grizzly bear interactions. Overall, the unit offers a promising DIY option, but preparedness for wilderness conditions and wildlife presence is crucial.

This area is located in western Wyoming, north of Highway 26 and just east of the Idaho border. Goat habitat is rough, steep and can be a physically demanding hunt.
This area holds a good number of mountain goats and also has the potential to produce a Boone and Crockett class billy.
This area consists of long deep canyons and high mountain peaks in the Wyoming Mountain Range. The peaks of the Wyoming Mountain Range provide the highest peaks in the area and vantage points for glassing and locating mountain goat herds.
The majority of this hunt area consists of Forest Service land. Most roads are marked with Forest Service signs. There is designated wilderness in this hunt area and nonresidents must be accompanied by a guide while hunting on it.
Mountain goats are typically found above timberline and in terrain that is very steep and rocky with limited vegetation. Timberline is at near 10,000 feet. Spruce, pines and firs grow densely below alpine tundra in rugged, rocky ridges and peaks. Middle elevations have firs, aspen and grassy meadows mixed with sagebrush.
Most hunters will camp remotely on Forest Service land with no permit required. Lodging at multiple motels can be located just south of the unit in Alpine and Jackson Hole.
