Located on the eastern border of Wyoming, this area contains portions of the Black Hills National Forest as well as other public lands. The hunt area is bordered by South Dakota on the east, Weston County Road #2 on the south and U.S. highway 85 on the west.
One of the best units in the state. Sheep are concentrated in this area on Elk Mountain and nearby canyons. Almost all sheep are located in a core 2-3 mile radius. These sheep were introduced from South Dakota in 2001 and supplemented with a transplant from New Mexico in 2005.
This is a fairly large hunt area with the sheep concentrated in a small portion of it. The area spans from the U.S. Highway 85 on the west, near the towns of Newcastle and Four Corners, east through oak and pine forest, across Stockade Beaver Creek to more open peaks on the South Dakota border. Elevation is not much of a factor. Ponderosa and oak timbered hills and mountains are broken up with large grassy areas and sandstone cliffs.
Sheep can be found on both public and private lands although they tend to prefer private. Landowners commonly charge access fee's onto their land. Pay close attention to land boundaries when pursuing sheep.
Vegetation is primarily ranch land and grassy pastures leading to open hills with sparse patches of pine and oak. Elk Mountain has sandstone cliffs which provide security for the sheep herd. Grasses and forbs provide the diet for bighorn sheep. Recent burns reducing timber have improved habitat both in Wyoming and South Dakota.
Newcastle is the closest town to access sheep hunting, and offers many options for lodging. Some motels in Newcastle are the Sundowner Inn, Pines Motel, Sage Motel and Hilltop Motel. Groceries, gas, and other amenities are available as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location.
