The Elk City Zone is located in north-central Idaho and provides some great over-the-counter options for hunters. The area here tends to be very dense in vegetative cover with some reprieve being found in the many logging clear cuts and a few scattered alpine areas. Good numbers of elk can be found here but physically traversing the terrain can be difficult. Success rates tend to be good for most seasons here and hunters who continually learn this zone can find repeatable success.
Elevations are generally lower in the northern half of the state but vegetation can get very extreme and difficult to traverse. Existing logging and mining operations have opened the ground cover in some areas and provide the only real glassing opportunities within the unit. The terrain can get steep at times and hunters may find it difficult when traveling cross country.
Great public access options exist here in the form on gravel logging roads, both maintained and not. Locating areas to hunt will not be a challenge but physically accessing them can be tough at times. With so much ground available to hunt most hunters will find little trouble in locating areas away from other pressure.
