The Island Park Zone is located in southeast Idaho along the borders of Wyoming and Montana. A wide array of terrain is found here from expansive sage flats to rough and rugged peaks. Good public access is found throughout the zone but hunting pressure can be high at times. Good numbers of elk can be found here, particularly later on in the year when snows have pushed migrating elk into the valleys. Most tags are distributed through the use of controlled hunt permits.
A wide array of terrain will be found throughout this zone. The southern end of the area sees expansive sage flats and agricultural areas. Along the Montana border, hunters will encounter large peaks and ridgelines full of dense timber and high alpine basins. Physically traversing the high country areas can be challenging. The eastern side of the zone will still see heavy timber but much less terrain exaggeration. Here, covering ground can be done much easier.
Public access is good in nearly all of the units within this zone. The areas near the Montana border will see heavier amounts of horse and outfitter traffic. Hunters in these areas will want to avoid established trails when possible to escape pressure. A healthy road system can be found throughout the remainder of the zone and hunters will find little trouble in accessing most hunting areas. Still, escaping pressure from other hunters can take some physical effort.
