The Lemhi Zone is found in east-central Idaho and features some great hunting options for those willing to work. This area is largely expansive sage and agriculture lands in the lower elevations and rugged and steep mountains in the high country. The mountain ranges in this area are almost ribbon-like in appearance in how they snake their way through the landscape. A good density of elk can be found here but this area does receive some hunting pressure. OHV use is fairly prevalent and hunters on foot will need to plan for this accordingly.
This area can largely be characterized as large, flat, and expansive valley bottoms with steep and rugged ridgelines and mountain ranges separating them. The mountain ranges are island-like but provide a great escape for elk and hunters alike. Elk can be found in the lower areas year-round but private land makes up a good portion of these areas and access can be an issue. When hunting these locations, hunters will find little trouble in traveling on foot. When hunting the high country hunters will be greeted with extremely steep slopes, rugged peaks, and an overall much tougher time of travel.
Public access to high country areas is good in this area in the sense that most of it is public land. Beyond that, hunters should expect many miles of foot travel to reach more remote areas. OHV trails can be found throughout the area that can get hunters a little deeper with less effort but some physical output will still be needed to distance yourself from other hunters. A motor vehicle use map can be handy.
