The Palisades elk zone is found in eastern Idaho and along the Wyoming state line. Some exceptional elk country is found here along with a good chunk of public land. Units 64 and 65 see a higher distribution of private lands but will provide some excellent opportunities for those with private access. Unit 67 has a far greater distribution of public land along with some great remote country. Hunters will find both over-the-counter and controlled hunt opportunities here.
Mild terrain and agricultural lowlands in the Snake River Valley in the west give way to rugged, deep drainages in the east. Big game animals live in a mixture of easy-to-glass farmlands in the low country, heavily timbered drainages are at mid-elevations and open ridges and peaks at high elevations. Most of the southern and central portions of the unit are made up of steep and rugged mountains with deep canyons and high, rocky peaks with steep chutes and basins that are easy to glass. Canyons are mostly covered in dense conifer forests.
Public access is great in most of the higher elevation areas but the low lands around the Snake River and along the northwestern and northeastern ends of the zone are largely private. Several county roads lead into public lands with trailheads taking hunters further in from there. Some OHV trails are available but much of this country will need to be accessed on foot or with livestock.
