As one of the last outfitters in the state to offer authentic pack-style hunts and mountain tours, Mesa Outfitters invites you to experience a true Colorado elk hunt on the state's western slope. The edge. The end of the Rocky Mountains. We operate as the exclusive outfitter on over 150,000 acres of the Grand Mesa, the largest flattop mountain in the world. This is a non-motorized unit, which allows us to offer truly backcountry big game hunts, summer horseback vacations, and Colorado fly-fishing.

Accessible only by foot or horse, our area remains primitive, private, and unfailingly wild. So come hunt, ride, or fish with us and take a break. We have a wide range of hunts available. From fully guided to DIY drop camps, we're sure to have an adventure to suit your needs and budget.

Mesa Outfitters operates in an area where the hunting roots run deep. We still camp where the original outfitter established its base camp on the Grand Mesa over 40 years ago and remains the sole outfitter on Unit 41 of the National Forest Service.  Unit 41 is non-motorized, so we offer some of the most remote terrains for the hunter, rider, or fisherman seeking a true back country experience.

We’re based in Grand Junction, Colorado, but our guides combine decades of experience earned throughout the west and across North America. We specialize in elk, bear, and mule deer hunting, but offer high country trail riding and fly-fishing trips as well. Our terrain reaches elevations of nearly 10,000 feet, topped by the flat rim of the Mesa. Trout-filled lakes, aspen groves, canyons, and numerous elk herds populate the land below, and we put you right where you want to be: the middle of it.

As our guest, you’ll enjoy your wilderness experience from our base camp in spacious walled tents. We cook all your meals, so all you have to think about is your hunt, your next ride, or the fish bite.

Elk Hunts

Hunting the Grand Mesa is a trip you will cherish for a lifetime.  Most elk licenses are Over The Counter. As one of the last authentic horseback outfitters in Colorado, you will truly get to wind back the hands of time on this elk hunting adventure. You’ll get to experience elk hunting much like our ancestors did. Our established canvas wall tent camps give you the sort of hunting experience you’ve always wanted. These rugged, yet refined hunting camps allow you to capitalize on exactly what you are looking for – A Hunt. Whether it’s an archery elk rut hunt, muzzle loader, or a fall season rifle hunt, we offer a package that will fit your hunting style. We take pride in the hunting business that we run, and work hard to show you the hunt of a lifetime. Our guides and staff together have years of experience hunting the area, and we take pride in understanding our elk herd and its seasonal movements. We would love the opportunity to take you on your next elk hunting adventure.

Mule Deer Hunts

Mule deer hunting on the Grand Mesa can be an incredible adventure. The Grand Mesa is home to a great population of mule deer, and the MO staff see several trophy class bucks each season. In the state of Colorado, mule deer tags can only be acquired through the draw process, and it typically requires 0-2 preference points. We can help walk you through the draw and application process. Application deadline is typically first of April. There are two rifle seasons to chase big muley bucks, also muzzleloader, but spot and stalk velvet bucks early in the archery season is a bowhunters dream. You can tell that the rut is starting to kick in during the rifle seasons, and it’s not uncommon to see bucks cruising for receptive does. For more information about hunting mule deer or adding it to your elk hunt, please inquire!

Bear Hunts

The Grand Mesa is known for its large population of black bears spread throughout the mountain side. We have seen bears everywhere from 9500’ aspen groves to the pinyon country down at 6000’. They mostly prefer the thick brush country around the creek basins and rivers, making them an ideal spot and stalk hunt. In our particular unit, it’s not uncommon to see color phase bears from cinnamon to dark chocolate. Having a bear tag in your pocket adds great excitement for elk hunters looking to add more thrill to their hunting adventure.
