This unit lies along and below the Mogollon Rim in central Arizona and is a good place for both trophy elk and trophy Coues deer hunters. Some elk seasons take place in part of the unit. Almost all Forest Service lands are easy to reach. Some terrain is rugged and there are four wilderness areas.

Hunters have a chance of killing a large Coues deer and this is one of the best units in Arizona for high quality elk hunting with a healthy herd. The unit also has low numbers of mule deer and some Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.

Steep mountain terrain below the Mogollon Rim in the north end of the unit. Rough and rocky desert mountains and canyons across most of the unit.

Tonto National Forest covers most of the unit and is open to the public. Limited private property around Young limits access.

Wilderness areas:

High elevations are ponderosa pine oak fir and spruce mix. Middle elevations have pinyon/juniper and chaparral. Lower elevations are high Sonoran desert with cactus desert scrub and grass.

Most hunters camp along roads in Tonto National Forest. Lodging is in Punkin Center, Young Payson and Roosevelt. Developed Campgrounds include:
