Hunters report mixed experiences in Arizona's Unit 4A, with success strongly tied to local knowledge and pre-season scouting. The unit's elk population is noted to be decent, but hunters highlight the challenging terrain and variable weather conditions during different seasons. Many recommend focusing on water sources and higher elevations, particularly during warmer spells, to increase chances of spotting game. It is suggested that those new to the area connect with local hunters or guides to better understand animal patterns and key locations for higher success rates.
Pine forest in the south, grassland flats in the north. Public access is allowed on two large and private lowland ranches. Some older bucks live in canyons, but deer numbers are low. Antelope hunters have high success, but this is not considered a good unit for hunting trophy-size elk.
This is a good unit for hunting big antelope and elk, but with only a few mule deer and Coues deer, expect low success for deer. Hunting is difficult during the late elk archery season.
