This small unit is located in southeastern California and lies just southeast of the town of Big Pine. The western half of the unit is largely composed of low-lying flat valley bottoms that provide great habitat for elk while the western half features a much more mountainous and steep terrain. Public access is good in this unit and glassing conditions are favorable.
The terrain in this zone varies widely, ranging from low-lying areas to high mountain peaks. Hunters will encounter a mix of open bottoms, broken foothills, and steeper, more rugged country as elevation increases. Most elk are typically found in the rolling river bottoms and the adjacent foothills, where a combination of cover, water, and forage provides consistent habitat.
Hunters can camp on BLM or NSFS lands and some modern lodging opens can be found in Big Pine. Some select sporting goods can also be found in Big Pine but bigger or more specific purchases will need to be made prior to the hunt.
This area is almost entirely public and a good road system can be found throughout the prime elk habitat. Hunters will need to watch some of the small parcels of private but this will generally not pose too much of an issue. Much of the lower elevation areas are composed of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power lands where hunting is allowed except where posted otherwise.
