The Cache Creek zone is east of Clear Lake in primarily BLM land, with some Department of Fish and Wildlife and state land, and includes the Cache Creek wildlife area.
This is not one of the larger elk hunting zones. It’s relatively easy to find elk and the state wildlife biologist are a great resource.
Terrain varies from moderate to steep grades without high elevations and nice scenery. The elevations are not extreme but the vegetation and ravines of the unit can be barriers to an effective harvest.
Highway 20 that cuts through the northern part of the zone will be the main access to the area. There are several other well maintained and not maintained road that intersect through parts of the zone.
The vegetation is highly varied throughout the zone ranging from scrubs, mixed chaparral and oak-hardwood forests to mixed chaparral, oak-grassland and dense conifer forests.
There is some open dispersed camp areas to the north of highway 20 on BLM property. In the town of Clearlake there is a state campground. There are state parks along the coast where camping is also possible, but check to make sure they remain open when you go.
