On The Ground
East of Interstate 70 from Byers to Limon and west of Colorado Route 71, this unit is mainly private except for landlocked state sections that are closed to public hunting. Mule deer, whitetail deer and pronghorn antelope are scattered and a few elk live in rough terrain.
Whitetails and elk are low in number and hunters must pay a trespass fee or book an outfitted hunt.
Terrain
Flat grazing and farm land to gently rolling prairies. Some moderately steep areas including arid breaks characterized by canyons, long draws and gulches. Beaver and Muddy creeks flow intermittently across.
Roughly 598 square miles

Vegetation
Hundreds of square miles of shortgrass prairie are interspersed with dryland wheat fields. Some areas have cedars, sagebrush and yuccas. Ponderosa pines are found in rugged terrain. Cottonwoods grow along creek bottoms in the northeast. Some Russian olives grow near ranch homes.
