Hunters discussing Unit 82 in Colorado highlight its challenging terrain and varying weather conditions, which can affect game movement and accessibility. The unit is noted for its beautiful landscapes and potential for successful hunts, particularly during the early season when game is more active. Successful hunters emphasize the importance of being physically prepared and having a good understanding of the area's geography. Additionally, insights suggest that scouting ahead of the season and being adaptable to changing conditions can significantly improve hunting outcomes in this unit.
The Sangre de Cristo Mountains run for 75 miles along the eastern edge of this unit, and Alamosa is at its southwestern corner. Elk and mule deer thrive here. Hunters may hunt in Great Sand Dunes National Preserve above Great Sand Dunes National Park as well as the Baca National Wildlife Refuge.
Much of the high country is in Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. There is an early September rifle deer season above timberline.
