This area is located between Dove Creek and McIntyre Canyon and supports a healthy herd of Desert bighorns. Access is more favorable along this stretch of the river than in unit S-63 just to the north.
Canyons, hills, ridges, mesas and rim rock are considerably gentler along this portion of the Dolores River than in unit 63. Canyons like Summit, Stevens, McIntyre and Bush can have 500 foot steep rocky walls. Horse Range Mesa, Disappointment Valley, Sharps Draw, Big Spring Gulch and Mountain Sheep Point all make up the different terrain of the area.
Pinyon/juniper, short grasses, spiny cactus, sagebrush, cottonwood, willow, some aspen cover the landscape in this unit.
BLM lands offer dispersed camping. Dove Creek, Nucla, Naturita offer some motels, cafés and gas. Grand Junction and Moab provide motels, hotels, restaurants, medical facilities, regional airport and fuel.

San Juan National Forest and BLM lands provide thousands of acres of public lands. Forest Service, County and BLM roads lead to or travel along the Dolores River. Joe Davis Hill is on County Road 16R. Some of the side canyons have establish trails along the bottom from Dolores River to the canyon heads.
