The McCall zone is found in central Idaho and features thousands of acres of public land for hunters to explore. Historically, this has been an exceptional elk area although densities have taken a dip in recent years. Most of the country here is fairly rugged and physical preparation will be important. Most of the hunting opportunities are available over-the-counter here but there is a controlled tag for rifle hunting in units 19A and 23.
This area is very mountainous with some farmland and valleys found in units 23 and 24. The remainder of the unit consists of heavy timber stands, abundant rocks and small cliffs, and many ridges and drainages. Burns have opened up the cover in some areas and can provide excellent glassing opportunities. Physically accessing some of the more remote areas can be very physically demanding. The use of livestock will be popular and hunters on foot will want to distance themselves from the more popular stock routes.
Public access is exceptional in this area and hunters have plenty of acreage to distance themselves in. A few roads are found throughout the region but a lot of this country is roadless and remote. Some trails are open to motorcycle use which can be an attractive feature for some, a motor vehicle use map will be helpful.
