The Pioneer elk zone is located in south-central Idaho and features some incredible terrain to chase elk in. This zone has been on the radar of many hunters in the last few years, and as such, hunting pressure has really climbed. Elk numbers are still good here but hunters should expect to encounter some competition. Glassing opportunities are excellent here and hunters can save a lot of miles on their boots with some quality glass.
This zone has a large array of terrain from flat farmlands to rugged and high elevation peaks. As the elevation climbs from low lands rolling hills will begin to form but will quickly turn into a maze of finger ridges that gain elevation quickly and top out in impressive rocky peaks. Elevations can get extreme in some areas. Overall, this country is fairly open and provides excellent glassing opportunities. Most of the timber patches will grow on north and west-facing slopes. These areas will typically provide the best options for locating bedded elk. Mostly dry creek beds wind themselves throughout the mountainous regions.
Public access is great in all of the units within the zone and hunters will have thousands of acres at their disposal. County roads can be found throughout the area along with trails. Outfitter activity can be high in here at times and hunters on foot will want to watch for this when using established trails.
