The South Hills Zone is found in southern Idaho and borders Utah and Nevada. Most of the tags here are distributed through the use of controlled hunts with the exception of archery opportunities in units 56 and 57. Most of this zone is largely open terrain and rolling hills but some small island-like mountain ranges are found in units 54, 55, 56, and 57. Trophy quality is good throughout the area and those lucky enough to hold a controlled tag can be in for an excellent hunt.
Most of the low lying areas are expansive sage prairies and agricultural lands. Rolling hills can be found here without any extreme terrain change. The island-like mountain ranges found throughout the area can get rugged in some areas but are generally fairly mild. Timber density will increase greatly in the mountainous regions. Some alpine country can be found along the highest points. Overall, glassing conditions are great here and will likely be the best option for hunters when initially locating elk.
Most of the units within this zone have good options for public access although the amount of elk habitat tends to be smaller. A good amount of county roads can be found here making for several options when accessing most anywhere in the zone. Hunts will find little trouble in physically traversing the area. OHV use is high at times and hunters on foot will want to watch for this, a motor vehicle use map can be very beneficial.
