Hunters have found Idaho's Unit 18 to be a mixed bag with its challenging terrain and variable game presence. While some hunters have successfully navigated the area's rugged landscapes and appreciated the unit's promise for deer and elk, others have noted difficulty due to the dense forest and steep slopes that make access and visibility challenging. The unit's remoteness can be both a blessing and a curse, offering solitude but requiring significant effort to traverse and find game. Prospective hunters should prepare for strenuous conditions and may benefit from scouting trips to familiarize themselves with the terrain to increase their chances of success.
This unit contains the Idaho part of the Hells Canyon Wilderness and many other steep, mountainous terrain that has quality elk and mule deer hunting. Hunters take a few whitetails every year.
This is one of the better units in Idaho for hunting mature mule deer. Hunters should expect physically difficult hunting, which is best away from roads.
