Small herds of elk and a good number of mule deer live in this partly private and partly public area, which is a winter range for many deer. Most animals are found on low mountain ranges north and northeast of Soda Spring.

Some hunters have difficulty because bucks typically stay in heavy cover during rifle season, but late season bowhunters have a good chance of seeing good bucks.

West and northwest of Soda Springs and between the tiny town of Chesterfield and Blackfoot Reservoir, this unit includes the Chesterfield and Sawmill ranges, Reservoir Hill, the Soda Springs Hills and the Ninety Percent Range. Almost all ridges and peaks are below 7,000 feet above sea level with a few ridges and peaks barely going over that mark. Outside and between the ranges are flat to slightly inclined dry farms, irrigated fields, meadows and flats and short foothills.

About half of this unit is private land, some of which blocks access to public sections, but hunters can get within a short hike of most public land on access roads. Some ranches are leased to hunters or outfitters. Hunters who are willing to hike a few miles can reach public areas that don’t get a lot of hunting pressure.

Low country is mostly composed of flat to slightly inclined rangeland and farmland. Draws and washes are full of sagebrush and grass with willows and brush along creeks. Meadows are choked with cattails, sedges and bulrushes. Some fields are planted in the Conservation Reserve Program and are mostly covered with crested wheatgrass. Some are planted in dry farm grain, and others are irrigated hay and alfalfa fields. A lot of foothills are covered by sagebrush and maple brush with scattered juniper woods and patches of aspens. Mountains are mostly open on western and southern exposures and timbered or heavily brushed on north and east exposures. Large aspen woods and conifer forests of firs, pines and spruces grow above about 6,500 feet. Serviceberry, chokecherry, bitterbrush and sagebrush are the main browse plants here, while dense bigtooth maple brush provides excellent cover for deer and elk.

Lodging is available in Soda Springs. Some hunters camp on BLM or state land, like near Twentyfour Mile Reservoir.
