This unit is mixed with parts of other sheep units and is open during a later-than-normal season. It also has roadless terrain in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness.
The unit is open during late October when hunters have a better chance of taking mature rams. Rams will begin moving toward rutting grounds and out of the high country.
The northern tip of this unit is the confluence of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and the main river. It consists of a large part of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness in Valley and Lemhi counties. Land is mostly mountainous with some canyons and steep, rugged mountains.
This area is roadless and is south of the Salmon River. Hunters can float the Middle Fork of the Salmon River to access some parts of the unit. Some outfitters offer guided sheep hunts from a raft base. Most of the area is accessible only by hiking long distances or riding horses.
Most of this terrain is open, consisting of grassy slopes with brush and timber patches, high mountain meadows, alpine basins and high mountains. North and east-facing slopes along with deep draws are mainly timbered with spruces, pines and firs. Some areas have been burned by forest fires and are good for sheep, since grass and browse plants will grow.
Plan to camp in the wilderness and hunt from a base camp or spike camps. Some guided hunters or those with pack strings stay in wall tent camps and ride out every day to look for sheep. An effective way to hunt is to stay in a backpack-style tent close to sheep, eliminating the need to climb several thousand feet in elevation every day.
