Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep | Dummy | Dummy |
West of Challis and north and west of the Salmon River, this unit produces good hunting for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.
There are a lot of sheep scattered in this unit, but are usually found during the season above 8,000' in steep and rugged terrain. Bighorn country here is easier to reach compared to other units in the area, but not many rams are taken in the breaks above the Salmon River.
This unit can be found in Custer and Lemhi counties and is west of Challis and the Salmon River. It also includes Black Mountain and part of Taylor Mountain. Most terrain here is mountainous and steep with some high basins, meadows, valleys and ridges that are flat and moderately steep. The Salmon River runs from about 5,920 feet near Sunbeam down to the south of Ellis. Steep river breaks overlook parts of the river, but flat farmland and rolling foothills can be found over the river in other places too.
The Salmon-Challis National Forest manages most of the land here. Most of the southern end and the eastern half is BLM land with state parcels and some private inholdings and private mines. Several thousand acres of private farm and ranch land can be found near Challis, and strips of private property are along the Salmon River in places. The main roads are U.S. Highway 93 that runs along the Salmon River on the eastern edge of the unit, and Idaho Route 75 that runs along the river on the southern edge. The northern end is mainly accessed by Morgan Creek Road, which branches into other forest roads with some trails restricted to motorcycles. The Challis Creek Road branches into a lot of other forest roads and trails west of Challis. The Castle Creek Road also gives access to the northwestern corner of the unit.
Most rams can be found in the high mountains in the western part of the unit, or in rugged terrain with a lot of cliffs. The eastern and southern edges have a lot of foothills, buttes and breaks that are mainly treeless and covered in wild grass. Cottonwoods and willows line some waterways here. Farm crops can be seen near the Salmon River on the eastern edge of unit.
Some hunters usually find it easier to camp either at a trailhead or in the backcountry than to hike and drive to a campground or motel. At least 18 campgrounds are in this unit or on its boundaries. Some campgrounds close in early fall. Lodging is available in Challis. Some places to stay include Pioneer Motel and RV Park, Watermark Inn and Northgate Inn Motel.
