Mostly farmland and prairie pastures, this unit produces many mature bucks every year. Most of them find cover in thousands of acres of timber land and brushy thickets, mostly along rivers and creeks. A majority of the land is private, but there are a few thousand acres of public hunting land and a number of walk-in private lands that are open to the public.

There are some public hunting lands near Cheney Reservoir and Kingman Lake and a fair number of walk-in hunting areas in the northern half of the unit.
