This district is located just north of Helena. Though mostly covered in private land, there are a few sections of BLM land that offer public access. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks estimates the antelope herd population near 300 animals.
A large portion of this district is within the Prickly Pear Weapons Restriction area with archery equipment, shotgun, traditional handgun, muzzleloader or crossbow only. A portion of this district is outside the weapons restriction area. This is a suburban rural area, use common sense while hunting.
Helena Valley is broad and relatively flat with the exception of Scratchgravel Hills that rise above the valley floor west of Interstate 15, from the Missouri River to the western edge of the unit. Lake Helena is filled by Seven Mile, Ten Mile and Prickly Pear Creeks and the outlet flows into Lake Hauser on the Missouri River.
Lush hay meadows, green suburban areas and large farms with irrigated crops create a contrast to the brown short grass found on Scratchgravel Hills. Pinyon, junipers and ponderosa pine do add some green to the hillsides. Russian olives, willows and cottonwoods line creek bottoms and drainages ditches. Large sections of sagebrush and other mountain shrubs are found on BLM lands.
BLM lands have a good system of trails and access roads. Check with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks regarding details on accessing properties within Prickly Pear Weapons Restricted Area. Remember this is a suburban area where farmland and house subdivisions are in close proximity, so use common sense when hunting.
BLM Scratchgravel Hills Recreation Area offers camping. Helena offers a wide variety of lodging, many good restaurants and cafes, a regional medical facility, a regional airport and 24 hour gas stations.
