This hunt district is located in central Montana, north of Winnett and extends north to the Missouri River. The northern portion of the unit encompasses some of the Missouri River Breaks. Antelope will be scattered throughout the unit and there is public land available.
Antelope populations are down to the lowest number ever counted. Barely 100 antelope were counted in this district due to a disease outbreak in 2009. It will take some time for this area to recover, but the numbers are stable and increasing slightly.
The northern portion of the district is the Missouri River Breaks. It is rugged country with deep eroded coulees, buttes, large drainages and very broken. As you head south and out of the breaks the country is more open and less broken, but enough topography for good stalking.
This district is easily accessed with county roads that run throughout the area, except these roads can get tough to travel if it rains. The majority of this unit is public ground with scattered ranches throughout. Make sure to bring maps that show land ownership. There are state sections and some ranches that allow hunting.
The Missouri River Breaks country is grasslands with scattered pines, cedars and junipers. To the south there is more grass and sagebrush and less trees and shrubs. There is some irrigated crop fields near the streams and along the Musselshell River. There is scattered dry land farming throughout the area.
Winnett has a small hotel, a restaurant and a gas station. Grass Range has gas and food. Camping is allowed on the BLM lands throughout the unit.
