This hunting district is found in northwest Montana along the Idaho border and just south of the town of Libby. This area features extremely steep terrain, nearly impassible ground cover at times, and some truly wild country including a large portion of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. Good deer and elk numbers will be encountered here, yet the average age of animals taken is generally fairly low. Some wise old bulls and bucks do roam the district, but finding them can prove to be very difficult due to the terrain. While it’s fairly uncommon, grizzlies can be encountered in the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness and proper precautions should be taken.
The overall health of deer and elk is improving recently in this area after a few harsh winters and some sporadic predator problems. This area is not for the faint of heart though, as the country will surely take every ounce of mental toughness out of you.
