This hunt district includes thousands of acres of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest along with portions of the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. The Continental Divide follows the Anaconda Mountain Range from Kurt Peak to East Pintler Peak. Sapphire Mountains form the western boundary and divides District 211 from 270.
This district offers opportunities for mature bulls, mule deer and whitetails. This is not considered a trophy destination for deer or elk, but hunters willing to put in some time and effort harvest good quality animals every year.
Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness straddles the Anaconda Range with elevations from 5,000 feet to over 10,000 feet along its crest. West and East Pintler Peaks are over 9,000 feet. Warren, Queener and Fish Peaks all are above 10,000 feet. Sapphire Range from Skalkaho Pass to West Pintler Peak has elevations that reach above 8,000 feet. Heading north of the Anaconda Range the landscape is broken by creeks, ridges like Lone Pine and Carpp, deep gulches named McDougal, Schoolmarm and Emerine and the wide flat Sandy Basin. South of Montana Route 39 is center pivot irrigated fields surrounded by broad flats.
Lower elevations consist of some irrigated farms surrounded by broad flats of sagebrush, mountain mahogany, bitterbrush with cottonwoods and willows along creek bottoms. Mountain slopes have dense forests of ponderosa and lodgepole pine, Douglas fir, spruce and aspen groves. Above tree line are meadows covered with grasses, small plants and wildflowers, talus slopes with lichen and some willows along lakes and streams. Fox Peak has hundreds of acres of new growth due to a forest fire some years ago.
The Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness can be accessed from trailheads at Pintler Lake, Lutz Creek, Moose Lake and Middle Fork. There are over 45 miles of maintained Forest Service trails with some that travel along the Continental Divide for miles. No motorized vehicles are allowed in the wilderness. Forest Service roads and county roads allow tag holders to gain access to thousands of acres of National Forest. November snowstorms can shut down many Forest Service roads. Be prepared by having chains, extra water, food and a four-wheel drive vehicle.
The Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness and Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest campers are restricted to 16 consecutive days in one place. Communities of Phippsburg, Hamilton and Anaconda have limited choices of motels, restaurants, medical care and service station. Missoula some 50 miles to the northwest has many motels, lodges, cafes, restaurants and service stations.
