This unit is located in southwest Montana, and encompasses the entire Tobacco Root Mountain range and has highway access on all four sides. Moose numbers and quality have improved here.

This unit has a very good moose population and has good quality bulls and is capable of producing bulls to the mid 40” class. Moose numbers are stable and may be increasing with good recruitment. Harvest in the past has been near 100% success.

The Jefferson River valley on the far west and north boundaries is an irrigated valley with a wide riparian area adjacent to the river. The west side of the tobacco Roots is very arid and there are long open slopes leading up to the base of the mountain and it rises abruptly to the peaks, it is very rocky on the west slope. The east and south slopes have a lot of foothills leading into the mountains. These sides receive more rainfall and are more lush in vegetation.

The Jefferson River valley is home to a good healthy moose population that live in the riparian area of cottonwoods, willow and brush as well as grazing on the adjacent agricultural crops. There are arid grass benches extending for miles to the base of the mountains on the west side. This side of the mountain is covered with mountain mahogany till high elevation and then it is conifer trees. The east side is grass benches to the foothills that are conifer forests with numerous open parks, wet lush meadows and lakes.

There is good access to the unit and throughout. The mountains are mostly national forest with numerous roads and trails. The Jefferson River valley is all private and access is difficult, but there is some available with time and energy inputs. The northern part of the mountain is mostly accessed by foot or horse. The southern part has several roads into it, and Forest Service trails.

There are numerous places to camp in the unit on public ground, and there are also public campgrounds in the unit. There are numerous lakes in this unit and many of them have good fishing as well as camping. Three Forks, Ennis, and Twin Bridges have several gas stations, restaurants and motels.
