Helena-South includes portion of Lewis and Clark and Jefferson Counties lying southwest of Helena. Thousands of acres of public land are available in Helena National Forest and on BLM lands. Prickly Pear Weapons Restriction Area covers the northeast corner of the unit. Much of the land between Jefferson City and Helena just west of Interstate 15 is privately held. Residents may apply for a limited antlered bull license.
Local hunters, hikers and campers create a multi-use area due to the proximity of Helena. The ridges coming of the Continental Divide are split by a number of creeks and gulches that bulls might use for travel corridors. Most peaks are covered with dense stands of timber so expect to find a bull anywhere cover, water and quality food is available. A few bulls may exceed 140” Boone and Crockett, but most trophies will range between 120” to 135”.
