This unit is located in northeast Montana, with the northern boundary running along the Canadian boundary for over 300 miles. The eastern boundary is North Dakota. There are three Indian reservations within this unit and are closed to hunting. The southern boundary is the Missouri River.
This unit is unique in the fact that the moose migrate into this area from mainly Canada, but also from North Dakota and these moose are NOT Shiras but Canadian Moose. The prairie population of Canadian Moose in Canada is doing extremely well. The tribal members on the Fort Peck Reservation kill 10 to 20 moose annually. This is an extremely large unit and a moose can be difficult to locate.
Quick Tips
- Moose numbers are extremely low for the size of the unit, if you draw a tag, put the word out to all the locals and be on call
- Bring good optics and maps showing land ownership
- This area is also very good upland bird hunting and has a decent deer population, there is also some great fishing to be had, it would be a great combo hunt
